Gerald Bassleer was born in Belgium in 1954, and started working in the ornamental fish industry at Aquaria Antwerp, Belgium in 1977, after obtaining his Masters Zoology, Ethology.
During his career in the fish industry he specialized in fish diseases. He worked and lived in the US, Germany and the Netherlands, for example as manager/director for Aquarium Glaser (Germany) and Ruinemans Aquarium (Netherlands). Gerald started his own company – Bassleer Biofish – in 1995, which operated as a wholesaler of fish until 2012 and currently Gerald acts as a consultant and trainer (so-called fish doctor) in different parts of the world.
He wrote and published several books and apps on fish diseases. He produces a premium quality fish food, Dr. Bassleers Biofish Food, to improve fish health. Additionally, Gerald writes for several aquarium magazines and OFI-Educational Series. He was President of OFI (Ornamental Fish International) from 2006 to 2016.
